Rumble in the Glen - Fight Night
Saturday 13th March saw the first Rumble in the Glen Event take place in Aviemore, Scotland.
The venue was the impressive Macdonald Aviemore Resort and the fight card included 1 demonstration boxing bout and 8 full contcat C Class Muay Thai bouts. It was officiated by the STBA and had fighters representing Fighting Fit Gym in Fife, M-MAG in Kirkintilloch, OB Muay Thai Gym in Johnstone and North Ayrshire Muay Thai all competing against each other or fighters from the two host clubs - Strathspey Thai Boxing and Moray Muay Thai.
It was a great event and the crowd loved the first Muay Thai show in the area........judging by the response of the spectators, staff at the hotel and travelling competitors/coaches, it will be an even more popular event next time round!

This event was the first fight experience for some and the second for others from Moray Muay Thai.....regardless all displayed great courage, skill, determination and fitness. We are so proud of them all!! Good work Jamie, Steven, Ryan, Willie and Paul.
Steven Wallace stepped in to take his first Muay Thai bout after only 7 months training. For the first fight of the night it was a cracker! An all out war against Greg from Fighting Fit Gym that lasted the full 5 rounds and saw Greg emerge victorious on a points decision. That said it was a brilliant performance from Steven, whose fitness and energy levels couldn't be questioned. Had the fight lasted another round or two his strong comeback might have been enough to seal a victory, but there's always next time.
Jamie Hendry was next on the card and showed a great deal of composure in only his second fight. His opponent Peter Champ from Strathspey Thai Boxing tried valiantly to deter Jamie from kicking by catching his leg time and time again, but each time Jamie countered with storng precise combinations and over the full 5 rounds the bout was declared unanimous points victory for Jamie! A great first fight for Peter and a real step forward in experience for Jamie who managed to control the pace throughout.
After the interval the first fight saw Moray Muay Thai Instructor Paul McCluskey step in to the ring 13 years since his last fight to face up and coming Ewan Irvine from Fighting Fit Gym in Fife. Ewan brought experience of 5 fights with only 2 losses and was a test for Paul. This fight was contested at 77kgs and a slightly slimmer (yet very pale!) version of Paul came out with controlled agression and worked to a game plan of attacking and countering shots to see him win most rounds and emerge victorious after the final bell, with a unanimous points win. A fairly balanced performance despite the constant pace of the fight.
Willie Walker at a youthfull 39yrs took his second Muay Thai fight and stepped in against an unknown in the shape of Pole Mariusz Frytek. Willie started slowly and sat back absorbing some shots from Mariusz as if gauging his potential strength and then unleashed a precise low kick that saw Mariusz visibly wince and drained all the colour from his face. As Willie composed himself further and Mariusz was given a standing 8 count in the first round it became obvious that Willie could stop him. After the bell Willie came out and worked the obviously sore leg of Mariusz and managed to stop the fight early in the 2nd round. A convincing TKO for Willie to add to his Muay thai record. That's him 2 fights, 2 wins, both by TKO. Nice work mate!
Ryan Francis stepped up at the final act of the night a faced off against newcomer Billy Hogan from North Ayrshire Muay Thai. This fight was explosive with Billy dominating the first 2 rounds any time the two locked up in the clinch, yet every time Billy put Ryan on the canvas from a throw, Ryan was on his feet in the blink of an eye. The pace quickened and another strong round from Billy seemed to put the fight out of reach for Ryan.........until at the end of the 3rd round Ryan unleashed his right hand and it visibly shook Billy. The 4th round saw them both exchange strong kicks and punches, but clear evidence of Ryans strength and detrmination on display. Going in to the 5th round it seemed that Ryan had the strength and ability to stop the now bleeding North Ayrshireman. Sporting a nasty cut under his right eye Billy had no option but to tie things up in the clinch to prevent Ryan scoring any more shots or doing any further damage to him. As the final bell sounded it became clear that Ryan had left his charge a little too late and he narrowly lost on points to Billy. A great strong performance by Ryan and an impressive debut by Billy - all in all a great conclusion to the event! Well done lads!!
